Dances with Fire

I got to see Danza Mystique at DMRF last weekend. (And I'm only getting around to writing about it now. Sorry; things have been hectic.) Their percussionist was carrying something I wasn't expecting, namely a fire extinguisher.

It was a very good precaution, though thank goodness it wasn't needed. Nasira closed the set with a very impressive routine using, um, well, i don't know if there's a name specifically for the devices, but imagine a hand fan with just the framework, and with the outer edge on fire in spots. That's the best I can do.

That day was also Nasira's birthday, and the audience was invited to have birthday cake afterwards. All right; she said it was her birthday. I'm not sure just when I first saw her dancing, but I have no reason to believe she's aged during between then and now, so I don't know whether I believe that.
