Creepy Butter Sculpture Update

Enough of a brouhaha has arisen over the Iowa State Fair's decision to put up a butter Michael Jackson that they've decided to put it to a vote. Online polls being what they are, I'm sure that there will be attempts to flood it with votes from both sides, but in any case, it will run from 9:00 a.m. today to 3:00 p.m. July 16, with results announced on July 17..

Like Lincoln? Not in this respect...

The Obamessiah has been likened to Abraham Lincoln, and he looks to Lincoln for inspiration. Unfortunately, there are a few things The One is skipping over, exemplified by some Lincoln quotations. One I mentioned recently, when writing about music for Independence Day:

It is the eternal struggle between two principles, right and wrong, throughout the world. It is the same spirit that says 'you toil and work and earn bread, and I'll eat it.' No matter in what shape it comes, whether from the mouth of a king who seeks to bestride the people of his own nation, and live by the fruit of their labor, or from one race of men as an apology for enslaving another race, it is the same tyrannical principle.

Sad to say, Obama appears to be embracing that tyrannical principle.

The other is a bit more mundane.

It would stink in the nostrils of the American people to have it said that the president of the United States had approved a bill over-running an appropriation of $20,000 for flub-dubs for this damned old house, when the soldiers cannot have blankets.

This one is called to mind by reports of Michelle Obama carrying a $6,000 clutch purse on a trip to Russia. The maker, VBH, was sure that it was the $6,000 model, but when the White House said that the First Lady was only carrying a $900 VBH clutch, VBH backed down. "If that's what the White House is saying, then it's [the $900] bag," the VBH representative who was certain otherwise earlier in the day.

Oh, well... if it was just a $900 purse, that's OK...

It's not like it's the first "Let them eat cake" situation for the Obamas:
  • "America may be in the midst of a deep recession, and the nation may be facing unprecedented deficit spending and debt, but the White House will not reveal the cost to taxpayers of the European vacation that first lady Michelle Obama and the president’s two daughters, Malia and Sasha, took last month."
  • "For the evening, the first couple jetted to New York City for date night.
"They dined a little more than two hours at Blue Hill, a West Village restaurant, then headed to the Belasco Theater to make it in time for Joe Turner's Come and Gone.
"The play by August Wilson is about black America in the early 1900s, with residents of a boardinghouse recalling their migration from the sharecropping farms of the South to the industrialized North.

"The White House refused to say how much the trip was costing taxpayers."

  • "Hors d'œuvres -- chicken curry, wagyu steak -- will be served in addition to drinks [at the White House cocktail party celebrating the passage of the economic stimulus bill]." [Wagyu beef is the generic term; Kobe beef has to actually be raised in Kobe, like champagne has to be made in Champagne. It goes for $100 to $150 a pound.]
