What's with Firefox and Thunderbird?

Lately I've been noticing that Firefox and Thunderbird, if left running for a long time, start to seriously run up swap usage and slow things in general down (due to thrashing?). (For a long time, I've noticed that Thunderbird seems to have some O(n**k) for k > 1 algorithms going, where n is the number of email messages in a folder (or perhaps just Inbox?).)

It's starting to be a definite proctalgia. I will go looking at the various sites that describe how to cut down on Firefox memory consumption, and take a look at what extensions I have going...and experiment with turning some of them off. (I will NOT give up Adblock or Flash blocking, though...) Thunderbird, OTOH, I am not sure what to do about.

Any advice would be appreciated.
