Deceit with the camera predates digital photography...

There's been the occasional scandal over digital manipulation of photographs: the darkening of O.J. Simpson on one magazine cover, putting Oprah's head on a young Ann-Margaret's body on another...but Photoshop/GIMP/etc. aren't necessary to deceive with a photo.

"Composition" is the choice of position and point of view to control what appears in a photograph, what stands out in the photograph, and so on. Little Green Footballs has a great example of it here. The closeup shows a supposedly touching moment with Cindy Sheehan and Al Sharpton... but the wide angle view shows just how phony and staged the whole thing is. Kudos to AP photographer L.M. Otero for taking both pictures, but which one do you suppose will be most widely propagated in the MSM?
